Night Markets of Taipei (2): Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market (華西街觀光夜市)

Another market close to the Taipei Station.  Just by telling from the name, you can see Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market is catered towards tourists.  It is actually well-known for the exotics (e.g. snakes) but there are plenty of choices for non-exotic folks like us as well :)

Huaxi during the day

Yet, I still find this night market very enjoyable.   Typically, when you visit a night market, you start eating when you arrive at the street but at Huaxi, my eating experience pretty much starts when I leave the Longshan (龍山寺) station.  (FYI, the best food in my opinion is actually along that street.)

Huaxi at night

If you have time, do check out the Mengjia Longshan Temple (龍山寺).  It normally closes at 5:00 pm but occasionally, it's opened at night as well.  (I think it's around February, in celebration of Chinese New Year.)

There are plenty of great street food within a one-block radius of Longshan Temple (龍山寺).  Here's some of my favorites!

Their licorices menthol is very famous here.
but our love is given to the preserved kumquat.
(only available in the winter)
Their dried lemon is excellent as well!

My mom's discovery.  She loves the green bean cakes here.
I realized this shop is very famous after the fact!

Mom said the mochi is very bouncy and delicious as well.

This is the best oyster intestine noodles I had in Taipei.  Beats Ah Chung (阿宗麵線) any day!

Right next to the noodles show there is this 20 year old shop selling a variety of marinated food.  My favorite is the Taiwanese style marinated clams.  In fact, all the other shops on this street are very tempting.  But our target is the night market, right?

So if you ate like I did, you will probably be very full by now but, you have only just arrived at the night market!  LOL  Here's another showdown of my favorites!  (collected over multiple visits...)  The below shops are actually across from the actual street bearing the archway.

A very famous stall.  It serves Taiwanese style oden.  Make sure you get the sauce and ask for extra soup in the end.

This is a very popular shop specializes in "aiyu jelly" (愛肉) aka vegetarian gelatin.  When it is closed, I just grab some fresh juice from the stall across.

Another of my favorite: date stuffed cherry tomatoes! I get this all the time when I am in Taiwan!

A delighted discovery!  I love the marinated fish skin from this place!!! It was SOOOOOO GOOD!!!  Thick, bouncy, and perfectly seasoned!  (Caution: it is also quite spicy!)  Highly recommended!!!
